Walsh is a name of European origin and was registered in medieval family crest  documents that mention noble families and also mention migration from the continent during and in the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066. In 1086 William the Conqueror introduced the record of the well written about Inquisition known to all as the Domesday Book, and this documented the ownership of lands of England to their extent of value and liabilities. 

The family crest name Walsh is from the translation of the Gaelic word Breathnach ”Welch” and the most closely associated territory of the Walshs is in Kilkenny where the Walsh mountains bear the name and also the name is synonymous with that great Irish sport hurling and at one time there were many Walshs on the Kilkenny hurling team one of note was Ollie Walsh. 

The name was registered in England in 1379 in Yorkshire and the variants of the family crest name are Walshe, Welsh, Walch,Welch and Walsman.

Ellis Island is open all year round except on December the 25th. There’s no fee for entry onto the Island.  When stepping off the boat, try to imagine how your ancestors must have felt when they first stepped off, not just a few minutes pleasant sailing from the harbour but rather several weeks at sea.  Put your mind back in time, and then keep that feeling as you enter into the museum and tour around.

Once you’ve taken a look at the items and photos on display, it’s time for work.  You can check records out at the American Family Immigration History Society located on the Island but you will need to know names and approximate dates that they would have been there so do your homework before you go.
